Bulgaria block Georgia's way to goal

Georgia were unable to break down a stubborn Bulgaria defence as the FIFA World Cup qualifying Group 8 points were shared.

Georgia denied
Bulgaria fought hard to earn a 0-0 scoreline at home to Italy on Saturday and it was a similar story in Tbilisi. Héctor Cúper's side had the bulk of the chances but Bulgaria held on for their third draw of the campaign, leaving Georgia on two points from four games.

First-half chances
If Bulgaria were hoping for an easier night than Saturday they were soon disabused of that notion. In the sixth minute Georgi Shashiashvili's header looped over visiting goalkeeper Georgi Petkov but missed the target, and Luka Razmadze and Levan Kobiashvili went close before Beka Gotsiridze shot wide when well-placed. Even after Georgia's Levan Mchedlidze and Mladen Petrov of Bulgaria were forced off through injury during the first half, the pattern of the match did not change.

Petkov heroics
The visitors did have two good opportunities after the break, but Aleksandar Tunchev headed wide and Stilian Petrov could not beat Georgi Lomaia in the Georgia goal. However, the hosts remained on top, led by lively 20-year-old Gotsiridze. Petkov had to perform heroics to block a one-on-one with substitute Giorgi Merebashvili and when he was finally beaten late on, David Siradze's header rebounded off the bar. Both sides continue their campaigns in the Republic of Ireland next year; Georgia on 11 February and Bulgaria on 28 March.
