{mosimage}Ukraine, which reached the quarterfinals in its World Cup debut earlier this year, managed to beat Georgia in a strenuous match in Kiev.

Zurab Khizanishvili almost broke the deadlock for Georgia as early as the second minute when his long-range effort flew just over the crossbar with goalkeeper Olexandr Shovkovskiy struggling to make up ground.

{mosimage}But it was the home side who went ahead after 31 minutes through Andriy Shevchenko, the Chelsea striker deftly heading into the top corner from Andriy Gusin's accurate right wing cross.

Georgia hit back seven minutes later, Arveladze outplayed Andriy Husin and drilled a low shot into the bottom corner to make it 1-1 in the 37th.

The visitors went ahead briefly in the 59th when Georgi Demetradze sent a curling free kick between a wall of defenders and past Shovkovsky - silencing the 30,000 crowd. {mosimage}

Ruslan Rotan headed in the equalizer off Anatoliy Tymoschuk's right-wing cross in the 61st.

Georgia might have had a third but midfielder David Kvirkvelia's shot scraped the crossbar.

Defender Andriy Rusol scored the winning goal in the 80th minute.

With the game running away from them the visitors lost their cool and both Arveladze and Demetradze went into the book for bad challenges.
